1.0 Introduction

A general summary of the causes and effects of oil mist build-up is presented. Special emphasis is given to describing is given to describing why modern oil mist detectors are effective not only as a safety system to avoid engine crankcase explosions, but also are effective in early failure detection and thereby, result in damage minimization.
