Large Diesel- Gas and Fuel engines onboard vessels do bear a certain danger in their daily operation. According classification society LRS, more than 54.000 2- and 4- stroke engines onboard LRS approved vessels were suffering a bearing damage within their crank drive within a period of 10 years*. *CIMAC congress 2010, paper No. 53, page 12

Operating a large Diesel-/Gas or Dual Fuel engine does include a certain risk of engine damage originated by e.g a failing main or conrod slide ring bearing or a piston seizure. As a result, consequential damage may occur, such as crankcase explosions due to igniting oil mist being generated by such an intial friction damage.
